&Beyond Ngala Tented Camp, The Telegraph

&Beyond Ngala Tented Camp, The Telegraph

On the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River, within the 14,700-hectare Ngala Private Game Reserve, this tented camp offers all the wildlife viewing of neighbouring Kruger National Park in a more intimate and exclusive environment.

Just one hour’s flight from Johannesburg and a quick road transfer from Hoedspruit, &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve is an easily accessed yet pristine patch of African bush in South Africa’s Northern Province. The camp is perched above the sandy Timbavati riverbed, where eagles soar overhead and herds of elephant and buffalo wander by. An airstrip caters for private charters for those that want to arrive in true Out of Africa style.

With just nine tents generously spread out across dense riverine forest and a pretty lawn, the camp feels wonderfully secluded. Built around nature, rather than imposing on it, neutral colours and natural materials add to the overall sense of tranquillity. Contemporary and eclectic, artefacts in the rooms, bar and restaurant draw on African landscapes and culture — woven chandeliers mimic weaver nests and an ancient, carved spice rack adorns the bartop.
